As early as 1913 a San Francisco paper noted “a futurist word which has just joined the language” – namely jazz – and whether or not the reference to Marinetti’s movement was intended, it was an enduring association. “Futuristic Rhythm,” “Futuristic Blues,” “Futuristic Jungleism,” “Futuristic Rag,” “Caprice Futuristic,” and even “Surrealism” are jazz titles of the Twenties which, like the anthem “You’ve Got To Be Modernistic,” were recorded by a range of musicians from Paul Whiteman and Charlie Barnet to Jack Teagarden and Fats Waller.
