The Institute, in collaboration with the College Art Association, New York, presents a round table discussion on the occasion of the centennial of Futurism, the movement founded by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and officially inaugurated on February 20, 1909 with the publication of its Manifesto in Le Figaro. Jennifer Bethke, organizer and chair of this special event, brings together wellknown Italian and American scholars to discuss various themes such as how we might assess Futurism one-hundred years after its inauguration: Italian Futurism and the Legacy of the Milanese Scapigliatura; Marinetti’s unexplored processes used to write his Manifestos; Futurists’ turn to the “primitive” and how this informed the architecture and landscapes of Virgilio Marchi, Enrico Prampolini, and Fortunato Depero; the role of Benedetta Cappa Marinetti. Participants in the round table will include: David Gariff, art historian and lecturer in the Education Division at the National Gallery of Art in Washington; Matthew McLendon, Curator at Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College; Michelangelo Sabatino, Assistant Professor at Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston; Siobhan Conaty, Assistant Professor of Art History at La Salle University in Philadelphia; and Ara Merjian, Lauro de Bosis Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University and Assistant Professor of Italian Studies at New York University.
